(Winnipeg), Wallingford Press, 1919. 276 p. (22 cm).. Nice modern cloth. Pulp type paper browning, still a good copy and a very scarce title. Portraits. The Winnipeg strike was a pivotal development helping to build a democratic socialist movement in Canada; when negociations broke down between labour and management in the metal & building trades, the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council called for a general strike. Within hours an almost unanimous response by workers, 30,000 left their jobs, closed the city’s factories, crippled its retail trade and stopped the trains; the strike was later joined by public sector employees. Opposition to the strike came from a group that called itself the Citizens’ Committee of 1000, funded and supported by Winnipeg’s most influential bankers, manufacturers and politicians. The Citizens’ Committee declared the strike a revolutionary conspiracy by foreigners. The federal government intervened soon after the strike began and swiftly supported the employers ordering federal employees to return to work or face dismissal. The Immigration Act was amended so that any striker who was an immigrant could be deported and the Criminal Code’s definition was broadened. Later, 12 strikers were arrested comprising J.S. Woodsworth who later became the founder of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, the forerunner of the NDP. Four days later the Royal North West Mounted Police charged into a peaceful crowd of strikers, injuring 30 and killing one. 250 $|
