regard, dérelié, petite tache d’encre, papier quelque peu jauni par l’âge,
marges légèrement coupées, autrement bel exemplaire. Les articles du Traité de
Jay, du nom du négociateur Américain John Jay, stipulaient les conditions de la
nouvelle entente commerciale entre le Canada et les USA. Parmi les articles on
remarque l’établissement de la ville de St-Jean (Bas-Canada) comme le seul port
d’entrée pour le commerce intérieur, exemptant toutes fourrures de frais de
douanes ainsi que toutes les marchandises Amérindiennes et exemptant, de plus,
les Amérindiens de la limitation du port de St-Jean comme seul port d’entrée.

Quebec, William Vondenvelden, 1796. IV,39 p. (30 cm). Édition avec textes
anglais et français en regard; dérelié, petites taches d’encre sur un feuillet,
papier légèrement jauni par les années, marges partiellement coupées, bel
exemplaire. Il s’agit de l’édition originale de 39 pages; certains bibliographes
considèrent que l’"Article Explicatif" (paginé 41-44) fait partie de cette
édition; il ne sera que d’une impression ultérieure car il ne fut signé que
le 17 mars 1798. Connu comme le "Traité de Jay" en raison du négociateur
Américain John Jay, ce traité stipule les conditions de premiers accords pour un
commerce plus libre entre les États-Unis et la colonie britannique du Canada;
c’est aussi le premier traité commercial entre les USA et le Canada. On ouvre
mutuellement des ports, on réduit ou élimine les frais de douanes etc. Parmi
les clauses majeures, la Grande Bretagne cède ses réclamations aux postes de
commerce de fourrure de Niagara, Oswego, Detroit et Michilimackinac. Pour les
Amérindiens, des clauses leur laissent un libre accès à chaque pays. Pièce
